Daniel graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2009 with an MChem degree in Chemistry with Nanotechnology. He then returned to his native Fife to the Ashbrook group for his PhD. His project focuses on characterisation of microporous materials by solid-state NMR. These materials have potential applications ranging from fuel tanks in hydrogen-powered cars to rapid healing of wounds. This project continues the theme of nanostructured materials for biomedical applications, an interest sparked in his undergraduate research project, in which he synthesised magnetic nanoparticles for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Outside of the lab, his hobbies include photography and appreciation of music and good books.
